HOME LOCK GUIDE

Should You Rekey or Replace Your Home Locks?

Rekeying changes which key operates an existing lock. Replacing changes the lock hardware itself. The right choice depends on the condition of the lock, the security upgrade you want and whether the existing hardware still fits the door correctly.

Choose rekeying when the hardware is still good

Rekeying is often the practical choice after moving into a home, losing a key or changing tenants when the lock body and finish are still in good condition. The cylinder is adjusted so the old key no longer works, and the lock is operated with a new key.

Several compatible locks can often be keyed alike, reducing the number of keys you carry. Compatibility matters: different keyways or brands may prevent every lock from using one key without changing some hardware.

Choose replacement when the lock is worn or the upgrade matters

Replacement makes more sense when a lock is damaged, loose, heavily corroded, unreliable or poorly matched to the door. It is also the right path when you want a different function, finish, grade, keyway or a smart-lock feature that the existing hardware cannot provide.

A new lock will not correct every door problem by itself. Misaligned doors, loose hinges and poorly positioned strike plates can make even good hardware difficult to operate. Those conditions should be checked before the job is quoted.

Questions that decide the job

What to send for an accurate estimate

Photograph both sides of each lock, the edge of the door and the strike area. Include the number of doors, whether deadbolts and knobs should use the same key, and the ZIP code and service address. Clear photos help identify compatibility before the technician arrives.

Mailbox locks are a separate service

Mailbox locks use different hardware and access rules. If the key is lost or the cylinder is jammed, describe the mailbox type and confirm that you are authorized to replace the lock. Mailbox service is included with our residential request form.
